#5 – Greensboro Massacre
The years between 1960 and 1970 were a statement for civil rights all over the United States of America. Among those, a special gathering organized by the Communist Worker’s Party (CWP) ended up in tragedy.
After weeks of tension between the CWP and the Ku Klux Klan organization in Greensboro, North Carolina, the KKK members decided to attend one of the CWP’s protests, named “Death to the Clan”. Paul Bermanzohn, the leader of the CWP declared “the KKK is one of the most treacherous scum elements produced by the dying system of capitalism”.
November 3rd, 1979 was the fatal day when the two organizations met face to face and it all ended in blood. The author of the first shot has not been determined ever since, but 88 seconds of shooting lead to the death of 7 people.
After almost 35 years since the massacre, on question still rises: Why was the media present, and no police officer? They had been at every other protest organized before…
