Sometimes movies do such a good job of wrapping you up in their world that you don’t notice the heaping layers of scientific bullcrap you’re being fed. No matter how realistic the following movies may seem, it turns out they’re about as plausible as the dead rising from the grave.
#1 – Gravity
While lauded for it’s high-level of tension and technical achievements (seriously, the special effects are unparalleled), several astrophysicists, including the famed Neil-Degrasse Tyson, have taken issue with the film’s portrayal of space exploration. In the film, Sandra Bullock and George Clooney wind up stranded in space thanks to a Russian satellite breaking apart, orbiting around the earth, and destroying their ship. To get home they have to hope from American to Chinese space stations in the hopes that one has a way back to earth.
The flaws? In the film, the space stations can all be seen from one another, which is absolutely impossible given the vast territory in between them in real life. They’d run out of oxygen long before they even got halfway between them.
