#5 – Maggots
Canned mushrooms, especially those in creamed soups, are utilized for multiple recipes; however, the extra ingredients may surprise you. The FDA currently allows over 20 or more maggots at any size per 100 grams of drained mushrooms and proportionate liquid or 5 or more maggots 2 millimeters or longer per 100 grams of drained mushrooms and proportionate liquid. When this is broken down the FDA will allow approximately 20 maggots and 75 mites in every 3.5 ounce can of mushrooms before any action will be taken by the FDA. While this is considered to be GRAS (generally recognized as safe) if you want to avoid the extra additives in your mushrooms it is best to go with fresh mushrooms.
