#6 – Sunscreen
A product that ought to protect you and your skin from harmful sunrays can in fact cause problems to your health. According to the EWG, sunscreens on the market contain mineral or chemical filters, and many other ingredients, which help stabilizing the filters and enhancing its protective result. Studies indicate that some chemical filters may disrupt the hormone system and cause other problems. Oxybenzone in particular, is a very problematic sunscreen chemical. Sunscreens with mineral filters are considered somewhat safer, but under certain restrictions.
Also, it must be kept in mind that proper sun exposure is vital for the human organism and the production of some nutrients, like Vitamin D.
Lastly, it is important to use sunscreen that does not only filter UVA, but also UVB radiation and to know that an SPF of 15-25 suffices for the protection of someone who has normal skin. Sun blockers with SPF over 35 are not necessary, especially for babies, since they contain strong chemical filters, which could be harmful. It is better to simply avoid sun exposure on high temperature days and sun peak hours and to wear hats and long, light colored clothing.
