#2 – Vitamin C

Vitamin C or L-ascorbic acid, is essential for building important structures in the body and for a healthy functioning immune system. The human body, unlike many other animals cannot produce vitamin C so it needs to be taken as part of a persons diet and lack of this essential ingredient can lead to scurvy (in extreme cases) and more commonly, a lowered immune system. Adequate intake of vitamin C is thought to help combat common ailments such as a cold and some studies suggest it may also help combat more chronic diseases such as cancer, cardiovascular disease and even Alzheimer’s.
Good natural sources of vitamin C include green and red peppers, blackcurrants, kiwifruits, broccoli and citrus fruits and the recommended daily intake for an average adult is 50 – 80 milligrams per day.
