#4 Construction of Golden Gate Bridge
This beautiful photo of the Golden Gate Bridge was taken in 1937. Before the construction, the fastest way of reaching Marin County from San Francisco was by boat. The ferry service was created in the early 19th century, yet the people were frustrated. There was no permanent link with the communities close to the San Francisco Bay, so the growth rate of the city was below state average. At the time, many experts implied that the construction of a bridge was impossible considering the swirling, strong tides and water currents of the Pacific. They did it anyway in 1937, and they named it Golden Gate Bridge. The suspension bridge is a 3-mile long channel between the San Francisco Peninsula and Marin County, thus bridging US Route 101 and California Route 1.
