#10 – Sickening Sliced Neck
Canadian ice hockey goalie Clint Malarchuk was playing for the Buffalo Sabres against the St Loius Blues on 2nd March 1989 when the blade of Blues’ Steve Tuttle’s skate accidentally slashed the carotid artery of Malarchuk’s neck. With blood spurting from his neck onto the ice, he was literally dying in front of the players and crowd. Quick-thinking team trainer Jim Pizzutelli pinched his artery to stem the bleeding until the emergency services arrived, literally saving his life. It took three hundred stitches to close up but amazingly, he was back in goal only a week after the injury. That didn’t stop eleven spectators fainting and two suffering heart attacks at the horrendous sight . How inconsiderate on Malarchuk to cause all this suffering!
