#4 – Satyagraha was Born in South Africa
Gandhi arrived in South Africa on a one-year contract with an India firm. However, he stayed in this country for 21 years. During his stay, he faced frequent racial discrimination and was arrested many times. He worked diligently for the rights of Indians settled in South Africa and soon became the leader of the Indian community. This is where he developed the concept of non-violent resistance or Satyagraha (Sanskrit for “truth force”). The Satygraha House at Johannesburg is a must-visit even today for history enthusiasts who like to retrace the steps of Gandhi’s non-violent civil disobedience movement.
