#2 – Communist President Nicolae Ceausescu
Romania’s history of communism ended in December 1989, with the death of communist “elected” president Nicolae Ceausescu and his wife, Elena.
On December 15th, a riot started in Timisoara, one of the most popular university centers in Romania, starting a national movement. Events soon escalated in Bucharest, leading to a similar action to the “martial law” in the U.S.
President Ceausescu was charged of leading military forces to kill innocent civilians and after a short trial, he and his wife were sentence to death in front of a firing squad. Nicolae Ceausescu and Elena Ceausescu were killed on Christmas day, 1989.
