#5 – Salo: 120 Days of Sodom
If there were an exact opposite of a masterpiece, this film would be that for director Pier Passolini. An orgy (oftentimes literally) of sexual deviancy and atrocious violence, this film about what happens when fascism reigns, is both interesting and hard-to-stomach. It was banned in several countries upon release, and virtually ended Passolini’s career afterwards. Many regard it as a well-made art film, but it’s rare indeed to find an art film this unpleasant to sit through.
