#1 – Failing to Look Properly
This is related to reason #2 in the previous post in that it is usually related to pulling out into a road, in the path of an incoming vehicle. Failing to look properly accounts for a huge 35% of all road traffic accidents and around 21% of all fatalities, with motorcycles being particularly at risk.
To conclude, here are some tips to help you avoid causing, or being the victim of a road traffic accident:
- Always pay attention to your driving / riding and do not succumb to the temptation of distraction e.g. mobile phones
- Set off earlier and do not speed, especially at junctions and country roads where there is oncoming traffic. Doubling your speed QUADRUPLES your stopping distance
- Never take drugs or drink and drive
- Always drive to the road and weather conditions – you don’t always have to drive as fast as the legal speed limit
- If you’re feeling tired, stop at your earliest safe opportunity and rest
