#3 – Margarine Is Better For You Than Butter
This is a debate that has been raging for a couple of decades and conventional wisdom has told that butter is bad for us because it’s full of saturated fat and has been linked with high cholesterol levels and heart disease. Yes it is very high in saturated fat BUT it is also good for you. Let’s explain…
Butter (especially organic) is a natural, energy dense food that is full of vitamin A, as well as vitamin D, E and K. Taken in small amounts, it is a good part of a healthy, balanced diet.
Margarines and spreads are made from vegetable oils such as sunflower and corn oils that are naturally liquid at room temperature. Turning a liquid into a semi-solid consistency at room temperature requires quite a lot of food processing such as hydrogenation, which changes the chemical structure of the oil. This process is damaging to the oils. Colours and preservatives are also added to make it look more appealing and last longer.
Eat butter sparingly and try dipping bread into extra virgin olive oil instead of using processed spreads and margarine.
