No one is suggesting that Julia Roberts is not a great and likable actor. The question is whether she executed the role of Erin Brockovich well enough that she could walk away with an Academy award. This award leaves a sour taste in the mouth as Brockovich is a real story of a woman who, despite her lack of proper training, did an amazing job defending a group of underdogs. This is the reason why Julia Roberts had to execute the role in a way that would represent Erin in the way she was. The feeling is that she just could not do the job that well enough; at least not well enough to win an Oscar.
