#1 – Get Some Experience
Related to the previous point about being flexible, there is nothing more valuable to a potential employer than relevant experience. Yes, qualifictions are important but they never have and never will substitute real on-the-job experience.
What on-the-job experience proves is that not only do you have the knowledge about how to do something, but you can apply the knoweldge to real life situations successfully. It also shows you have many other of the important skills mentioned above, such as communication skills, self-management and people skills; qualities that are so valued by employers.
The type of experience you need to make yourself more employable might come in the way of part-time or volunteering work. Don’t think that doing this type of work is failing, it is nothing of the sort. It will put you in the right type of work scenario that will enable you to learn more about the industry, how you fit in (or don’t) and what opportunities are arising. This will put you in a much stronger position than someone at home waiting for opportunities to come to them.
Despite the current economic climate, there are countless employers out there right now who can offer rewarding careers to individuals who can help their companies prosper.
