#3 – Swordfish
Although it is important to include fish in a healthy diet, one should keep in mind that fish does not always equal fish. It is important to choose varieties, that contain less mercury, especially so, if you are a pregnant women or want to become pregnant, or are a nursing mother. Higher amount of mercury has been recorded in swordfish and albacore tuna (canned tuna has fewer mercury), among others. Bigger fish, which are higher in the food chain, contain more often higher amounts of mercury, since it is accumulating in the organism.
According to the EPA and the FDA, high levels of mercury can harm the fetus and young children, because mercury is a neurotoxin. So eating such fish, especially regarding the above mentioned persons or children, should be avoided.
