#10 – Drinking Alcohol Is Bad For You
While we’re not endorsing regular drinking habits, a small glass or two of wine with an evening meal is by no means unhealthy. The distinction here is amount and type of drink.
Beers and ales are not only high in calories, but are estrogenic and this is evidenced in men who drink too much, developing unsightly ‘man boobs’. If spirits and drunk, a clear spirit such as vodka is acceptable if drunk with a high anti-oxidant juice such as pomegranate or cranberry juice.
The healthiest alcoholic drink is wine, especially red wine, which has been shown to have moderate levels of health promoting phenols. These phenols have been shown to have anti-inflammatory, blood sugar-lowering and other cardiovascular effects and are believed to responsible for the ‘French Paradox’. The french are generally known to eat diets high in fat and drink a lot of wine, yet suffer from less cardiovascular disease than most of their counterparts in other parts of Europe or America.
So drink wine in moderation and stay away from beers, ales and darker spirits.
