#7 – Defragment Your Hard Disk
Problem: Virtually all the information on your computer, from files, photos and videos, to software and the operating system itself, reside on the hard disk. That is a lot of information and over time, it can become disorganised, meaning that opening and retrieving this information can become increasingly sluggish.
Solution: Defragment your hard drive. To do this, go to Computer > right click on the C drive > select properties > click on the tools tab > click on Defragment now > select the drive you want (if you have more than one hard drive partition) and then click on defragment. Do this approximately every 3 months.
Tip: If your computer uses a solid state drive (SSD) then it is not necessary to defragment. Also, always try to maintain at least 25% free space on your hard disk as full hard disk’s will become slow, even if fragmented. You can do this by investing in a larger hard drive or transferring files you don’t need to use regularly (e.g. photos and videos) on to an external hard drive.
